It puts a steady butane flame 58 cm out in front of you, so you can work it into the coals of a braai, under the kindling in a fire pit or into a pile of charcoal without leaning over the heat. Leave out the 20 cm extension and it is a 38 cm torch for closer work.

It screws straight onto a threaded camping gas canister, or onto the tall cassette cans sold in most supermarkets using the adapter in the box. The body is stainless steel, the grip is carved hardwood, and the whole thing comes apart into a small drawstring pouch.

Good to know before you buy: there is no igniter and no gas in the box. Light it with a lighter or a match, and pick up a can of butane with your groceries.

  • Close the valve before you swap cans. Turn the knob fully closed, then unscrew the canister or the adapter.
  • Let it cool before it's packed. The burner head stays hot after the flame is out. Give it time before it goes back in the pouch.
  • Check the seal. Look at the rubber ring inside the gas connection before you screw on a can. If it is cracked or missing, don't connect gas — get in touch and we'll sort it out.
  • Smell gas? Close the valve. Check the can is screwed on straight and the joints are snug. Brush soapy water over a joint: bubbles mean a leak.
  • Store it dry, can off. Keep the wooden handle dry, and never store the torch with a canister attached.
